Do
I have to wear eye protection?
YES! Eye protection is required by law. The eyelid does not effectively
block ultraviolet light while tanning. Eyes are unable to protect
themselves from UV light, even when they are closed, and the light
can cause temporary and permanent damage to the eyes. Therefore,
the use of protective eyewear is required by Global Tan to ensure
that our customers do not suffer ill effects such as cataracts or
corneal burns.
Why
should I use a lotion?
Using a high quality tanning
lotion can ensure you get the best tan possible. Since tanning depletes
the skin of moisture, vitamins,
and minerals it is important to use a lotion that can replenish your
skin, keeping it looking healthy. Healthy skin tans faster, darker
and lasts longer!
Will
burning first allow a faster and darker tan?
NO. Burning is the
enemy! Many people falsely assume that sunburns will eventually fade
into tans. This is not true. Burning causes
damage to the
surface layers of the skin. Once damaged from a burn,
the melanin in your
skin may not complete the tanning process.
Unfortunately, skin injuries from overexposure to ultraviolet light
may not develop for many years after the initial, damaging sunburns
occurred.
Is
it okay for pregnant women to tan?
One concern about pregnant women
tanning is the heat. Pregnant women
should use caution with all potential
sources of heat such as indoor
tanning, saunas and jacuzzis. Heat travels a lot further into a person’s
body than ultraviolet light does. UVA rays penetrate the deepest
at only 2 mm (the thickness of cardboard). There is not sufficient
energy produced from the
lamps to penetrate any further.
What
causes white spots?
Tinea Versicolor, a skin condition that affects
tanners, is caused by a
microscopic fungus from the scalp. This fungus
falls onto parts
of the body
and leaves a bleached area on the skin, which can spread.
It is treatable and must be protected from further ultraviolet
light exposure until those bleached areas have begun developing melanin
again.
Why
isn’t my tan getting
any darker?
Each of us has a genetic
pattern that dictates our natural skin color and how
dark our tan can
get. Using a tanning lotion immediately
before tanning and a moisturizer or conditioner afterward will help
you reach your maximum tanning potential. Also, moving from and “entry
level” to “upgrade” tanning units will
help you
get your tan as genetically dark as possible because of the increased
number of tanning photons of light.
What
is a Tingle?
Lotions with tingle are used to increase the blood
flow of the smaller vessels closest to the surface of the skin to
enhance the tanning
process. Global Tan
has a wide variety of tingle products with
different levels and we will assist you when choosing a tingle product.
Tingle Tip: If you are using a tingle product for
the first time and are a little nervous, apply the tingle to a small
area of your body
to see if you can tolerate the reaction. Be sure to use common sense
when using tingle products!
